How to Fix the Typing-on-Touchscreens Problem

Considering how much typing on a glass touchscreen blows in comparison to using hard keys, it's easy to imagine how Blackberry saw the first iPhone back in 2007 and thought, "Bah, this isn't a threat." We all know how that turned out. But typing on glass still blows, and voice dictation on mobile devices (while pretty awesome) isn't a good fit for every situation. So how can we un-blowify touchscreen typing? Two interesting software-design approaches have recently emerged: one rethinks how the keyboard looks, while the other rethinks how the keyboard acts. (Spoiler alert: I think the latter has more potential.)

KALQ, an experimental system developed by a team of HCI researchers including Per Ola Kristensson (whose distraction-reducing display interface I wrote about here), takes the standard QWERTY keyboard layout and redesigns its layout to reflect mobile-device usage patterns (well, one in particular: gripping a phablet or tablet in landscape view with both hands and typing with one's thumbs). KALQ takes its name from its redistribution of the QWERTY keys. It splits the keyboard into two mini-keyboards: one on the left, one on the right, each positioned within easy striking distance of the thumb on each hand, with the letters laid out in such a way to maximize efficiency. For example, the researchers discovered that oft-typed words like "on," "see," "you," and "read" must be typed solely with one thumb if the QWERTY keyboard is simply split in half. Typing entire words (even short ones) with one thumb is slow and awkward. So they redistributed the keys across the two "boards" to make a better ergonomic fit for these word-usage frequencies.

The result? A 34% boost in typing speed. The catch? It'll take four to eight hours of training to be able to use it at a level of fluency equivalent to a standard QWERTY keyboard, and more hours to get faster.

Meanwhile, a startup called Syntellia has created a soft keyboard called Fleksy that is also dedicated to making touchscreen typing less cumbersome. It's still a QWERTY keyboard, though. Instead, Fleksy uses a beefed-up autocorrection/prediction engine under the hood to minimize typing errors. It's so beefed-up, in fact, that you can use it to type accurately without even seeing the keys. So blaze away as fast and out-of-control on your glass screen as you like — Fleksy's software will mop up your mistakes. (In theory. I tried it myself on iOS and was encumbered by the weird gesture it makes you use instead of hitting a spacebar button. If they'd kept that in, I'd have been much faster.)

Both KALQ and Fleksy are flawed but technologically impressive solutions to similar problems. KALQ, though, seems like a design solution wrought in a vacuum. It asks, What if we could redesign keyboards from scratch to better fit how we use mobile devices now? The trouble is that keyboards don't exist in a vacuum, and they don’t only exist now. The QWERTY layout is an interface that, over the past 135 years, has become culture: it exists across many domains, anywhere that text input goes into a machine, not just touchscreen mobile devices in 2013. It's what people expect when they have to or want to input text with their hands. Sure, the original technological reasons for that QWERTY layout— to prevent jams in the physical mechanism of late-19th-century metal typewriters — no longer exist. But what does exist, and has for well over a century, is the cultural expectation that keyboards equal QWERTY.

So, do you take that fact into account when designing a solution to this problem — or ignore it? There's no "right" answer, but the Fleksy approach seems less likely to fail completely, because it doesn't seek to shrug off all that cultural weight that QWERTY has. If the real design problem being addressed is, "How can we make soft-key typing faster?" then you might wonder, "what slows people down when typing on soft keys?" Is it ergonomics or something mechanical — a feature of the system? Or is it an outcome of those ergonomics? What slows me down when I type on a touchscreen isn't the lack of haptic feedback or suboptimal key arrangement. What slows me down, really, is the outcome of compensating for the limits of the system on glass screens — that is, my own error-correcting behavior: I have to stare at the keys to make sure I'm pressing the right ones, move more slowly, or back up and correct what I mis-typed. So if this manual error-correcting behavior is what is slowing me down in this context, perhaps the solution is not to redesign the keyboard into a wholly-unfamiliar-but-somehow-technically-optimized arrangement, and ask me to learn it, even though this new learning will not apply to any other manual text-input task I'll ever encounter — but simply let me keep doing what I already know how to do, while relieving me of that error-correcting burden. Keep the QWERTY — the cultural artifact I'm already an expert user of — but add software that minimizes my error —so I don't have to slow down. This is what Fleksy aims to do.

Granted, KALQ's alternative layout is a logical reaction to the fact that, when you try to solve the ergonomic problem (splitting the keyboard into two pieces that live on either side of a device's screen, easily accessible by your thumbs), some of QWERTY's advantages simply break — so there was no choice but to rearrange the keys in order to commit to that ergonomic solution. In light of Fleksy's approach, though, I just wonder if that tradeoff is really worth it.

And Fleksy doesn't work perfectly yet either — not even close. But that design approach somehow seems more human-friendly, in the larger context of keyboard usage. It's to their credit that both Fleksy and KALQ's creators have not simply conjectured from armchairs about what would, could, or should work: they've put in an impressive amount of research into identifying and implementing their respective solutions. Still, that research — and the solutions it suggests — derives from asking very different questions about what this typing problem really is.

Android developers – Make a BlackBerry Hub-like app (or launcher)

Here’s a simple though not-that-easy to accomplish idea – make a BlackBerry Hub-like app for Android. If you had a chance to try out the new BlackBerry Z10, you’ve probably noticed how sexy the Hub is. For those who haven’t got a chance to play with the Z10, the Hub is a place where all your messages come in — including emails, text messages, chats, notifications and more. In addition, third-party apps like WhatsApp and Skype will also be able to integrate with the Hub, making for a that much better solution.

There are many tweaks I would like to see, like better GMail support, but overall I like the BlackBerry Hub. That said, I would love even more to see something similar made for Android devices. Sure enough, there are push notifications, but they don’t give you the same versatility as the Hub does. Plus, in most cases notifications will require you to open an app to accomplish some task — for instance, you can’t Delete an email from notifications, and you’ll rather have to fire-up the GMail app to do that.

Now that I’m thinking, a dedicated app may not be the perfect solution. We may need a whole new launcher that works like the BlackBerry Hub, making all your messages easily accessible from pretty much everywhere. That’s how BlackBerry did it, and that rocks.

What is essential is the proper GMail support, as well as the ability to sing along with third-party services like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype and so on. Please don’t make me use “Flag” instead of “Star,” and I really need that “Archive” button. Just an idea I had… Any takers?

World’s first smartphone for the blind

World’s first smartphone for the blind launching soon in India.
Sumit Dagar is a (great) man behind the world’s first smartphone for the blind, which will launch soon in India. Using a grid of pins that move vertically to form Braille letters, this device has the potential to open a whole new world for the visually impaired.

The phone’s “touchscreen” is capable of elevating and depressing the contents it receives to transform them into “touchable patterns.” The magic happens thanks to the Shape Memory Alloy technology using metals capability to remember the original shapes, and expand and contract to after use.

According to Dagar, the response during the test has been immense. “It comes out as a companion more than a phone to the user. We plan to do more advanced versions of the phone in the future,” he added. And we hope he and his team will succeed, big time.
Don’t you love how modern mobile technology makes world a better place?

Review Sony Xperia ZL Completely

Already sold on Sony’s latest Xperia Z handset? Not so fast. The Xperia Z isn’t the only great device that Sony announced at CES this year. Announced alongside the Z was the ZL, and it is very much its own beast of a phone.
With an equally robust feature set as the Z, the Xperia ZL is quite the charmer. It may lack the solid glass back the Xperia Z rocks, but it has quite a few tricks up its sleeve as well. That said, is the Xperia Z still the shining star in Sony’s lineup, or is the ZL up to snuff with its brother? In this review, we’ll see if the Xperia ZL has what it takes to be the next phone in your pocket.

Review LG Lucid 2

LG is back with the follow-up to the Lucid that debuted around the same last year on Verizon Wireless. The aptly named Lucid 2 ships with updated innards and a new design. While the handset is firmly in the mid-range device category, it’s hardly something to dismiss if you’re a new smartphone user.
Coming in at the lovely price of free, the Lucid 2 will certainly turn heads of those looking for a capable smartphone that’s not not overloaded on unneeded features and simple and to the point. But is that enough? In this review, we’ll see if LG’s mid-range monster can clean the slate and be the one go-to handset in its category for Verizon.

Review Asus Memo Pad Smart 10

Beyond the hordes of Android tablets currently on the market today, only a select few get attention. This is either because said tablet is very cheap or very powerful, in which the two rarely find a middle ground. It’s easy to assume that a $500 tablet should is better than a $200 tablet, and for the most part, that assumption would be correct. On the other side of that, many seem to assume that a cheaper tablet, below the $300 price point couldn’t possibly be good enough to suit one’s needs. Especially when it comes to 10 inch tablets. This is where that assumption is wrong.
Enter the Asus Memo Pad 10. A tablet that’s both powerful and affordable, but isn’t claiming to be anything it’s not. The tablet itself finds its way into a sea of competition, so is the Asus Memo Pad 10 worth the purchase? In this review, we’ll put it through its paces and see what this budget tablet that lacks “budget” specs is all about.

Samsung Galaxy phones found easier to use than iPhone [Survey]

Siegal+Gale released interesting research results that probably come as a bit of a surprise. After surveying 400 people about the simplicity of a Samsung Galaxy phone compared to that of an iPhone, the Samsung devices came out champions of simplicity over Apple’s smartphones.

According to the survey results, Samsung’s main three advantages are high-tech features that are also user-friendly, clear advertising, and compatibility with non-proprietary apps. On the iPhone’s side, clear advertising was also a strength, plus it scores big for intuitiveness and customer service. Still, the Samsung Galaxy was the victor.

“At the brand level, Apple is perceived as simpler than Samsung, but on a product level, challenger Galaxy has knocked the long-standing simplicity champion onto the canvas and out of first place,” Siegal+Gale reports.

Apple does still carry a better reputation overall as a brand compared to Samsung. In fact, it’s the number five best ranked company globally, while Samsung doesn’t even break into the top 10.
The whole survey seems a tad hard to believe because generally iPhones have always been considered easier to use. Even Android fans have agreed to a certain extent. I typically see claims that while the iPhone is easier, Android phones are more powerful and can do more, which is a fair argument.

New Foursquare

Foursquarethumb
Foursquare launched a major update to its iOS app Wednesday, now with more focus on what’s around you rather than who.
While the app is certainly all about checking in — and has a new larger check-in button front and center on the app’s home screen — it’s also about helping you find things to do around you. Whether you’re looking for a place to grab a cup of coffee, or trying to find out what club in town is the most popular, there’s a little something for everyone.
Using Foursquare religiously since its launch in 2009, I took version 6.0 out for a spin this afternoon to see just what the hype’s about.

Ready to Explore

When you launch Foursquare, you’re taken directly to an Explore page, where you can see at a glance which of your friends are located around you, what’s happening in the area, and what new businesses might have popped up since you've last been around.
All of that information is contained in a small widget at the top of the screen — you can scroll down to see friends worldwide — with a map behind it. Want to see what’s going on in map view? Tapping on the small map at the top of the page will bring up a full-screen version.
Friends are represented on the map with their profile pictures. Other places on the map, such as restaurants and bars, and noted by familiar location-specific icons — for instance, a bar has a picture of a martini glass. Tap on an icon and you can see that particular location’s rating, as well as its business type. Tap again and you're on that location's Foursquare page with photos, check-in info, tips and more at your fingertips.

Getting Specific

At the top of the Explore page is a search box where you find something like a slice of pizza near you. Those results are then shown on a page similar to that initial launch page, with a list view of establishments meeting your search criteria below a map view of the same information. Once again, tapping on the small map will bring up a larger full-screen view.
In the case of search, however, that map information is more detailed, offering you not only the name and rating of a location, but also highlighting particular establishments where your friends have visited or left tips.
My search for pizza places immediately highlighted a nearby location where my friend Taylor had left a tip, and tapping around, I was able to find several more locations nearby that were frequented by my friends.
The whole experience is pretty snappy, and makes it easy to find a location near you that you know you'll enjoy, primarily because your friends are essentially recommending it to you on the fly.
You can also browse nearby locations by Best Nearby — Foursquare’s suggestions for what to do around you — by Specials, or by a particular type of location, for instance, coffee shops.

Still Foursquare

At its core, Foursquare is still the same app it was when it launched four years ago. If you want, you can still just use the app to check-in to locations and see what your friends are up to, now a little faster and on a much prettier interface.
Over the past four years, the app has evolved into a more feature-rich experience, however, one that can and should be used for a whole lot more.
Foursquare 6.0 is available now from Apple's App Store.

The world’s thinnest smartphone

Oppo to release world's thinnest, 6.13mm smartphone on April 26th

Oppo will yet again claim the title as a maker of the world’s thinnest smartphone. The soon to be launched Oppo R809T will measure just 6.13mm, packing some serious hardware under the hood. This bad boy will come with a 4.5-inch 720p HD screen, MediaTek’s MT6589 quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM, among other things. I would say that’s a good balance between performance and features as I’m not sure MediaTek’s gear and 1GB of RAM would provide enough horse power to make things run smoothly on a full HD screen. Moreover, I’m not sure there’s a need for full HD resolution on a 4.5-inch display.

As for the price, Oppo will sell the R809T for 2,500 yuan (about $403) sans any strings attached.
We applaud Oppo for being obsessed over its phones’ thickness and would really like to see their products hitting Europe and the Americas. Or to put it other words, we want the OPPOrtunity to buy one of these ourselves.

Review LG Optimus G Pro Lengkap

Spesifikasi

Spesifikasi Lengkap

Keunggulan
  • LG Optimus G Pro memiliki spesifikasi kedudukan tertinggi, termasuk 600 Snapdragon Qualcomm quad-core SoC, 13-megapixel, 5.5-inch layar penuh HD, 2GB RAM, Miracast ...

  • HSPA + LTE konektivitas
  • 5.5-inch full HD (1080 x 1920 piksel) True HD-IPS + layar LCD yang bekerja bahkan dengan sarung tangan
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064T 600 SoC dengan quad-core 1.7GHz Krait 300 CPU dan GPU Andreno 320
  • 2GB RAM, 32GB built-in storage card, slot microSD
  • 13-megapiksel belakang kamera dengan sensor backlit, HDR, sentuhan-fokus, face detection, LED flash, dll
  • 2.1-megapiksel menghadap ke depan kamera
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi a / b / g / b, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS + GLONASS, NFC, 3.5mm audio jack, FM radio
  • 3140 mAh baterai
  • TV out dengan MHL-enabled port microUSB dan Miracast
  • Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean dengan LG Optimus UI berjalan di atas
  • Dimensi: 150,2 x 76,1 x 9,4 mm, 160 gram

Bahkan, itu luar biasa bagaimana beberapa milimeter membuat perbedaan besar - phablet Sammy ukuran 151,1 x 80,5 x 9,4 mm (5,95 x 3,16 x 0,37 inci), sedangkan bayi LG memiliki dimensi 150,2 x 76,1 x 9,4 mm (5.91 x 3 x 0,37 inci).

Web Browser, Multimedia Dan Kamera
Web Browser

Kualitas Call Dan Battery Life
