Clean up Your Facebook Profile With FaceWash

We've all been there. Your grandmother just joined Facebook, your boss sent you a friend request or you're applying for that dream job. Suddenly, you're scrambling to purge your profile of last night's pictures plus everything else you wouldn't want Grams to see.

Painstakingly filtering through your Timeline isn't going to cut it, but FaceWash makes it easier. Three Kent State University undergrads created a web app that cleans your profile of incriminating content to give you a "fresh face."

The app allows users to search the profile with a "dirty word" list, a precompiled set of offensive or distasteful terms. You can also input your own words, and the returned results are displayed in categories such as "links that you have liked" or comments.

When taken to the questionable content, users have the option to either delete or change privacy settings. Check out the video, above, for more.

Like most Facebook-compatible web apps, FaceWash asks for access to your basic information, email address, profile info and photos. The free app is ideal for professionals in the making, creators Camden Fullmer, Daniel Gur and David Steinberg say on their page.
"You spent the last four years being a college kid. And that's wonderful. But a lot can happen in four years, and Facebook never forgets," the site describes.

The students hope to add more features, reports the Los Angeles Times, giving the app the ability to search in other languages.

PaperTab Is a Tablet as Thin and Flexible as Paper

Are tablets of today too fat and clunky for you? Meet PaperTab, a 10.7-inch tablet that's almost as thin — and flexible — as a sheet of paper.

Developed by Plastic Logic, PaperTab has a flexible touchscreen that lets users send files and emails and navigate through pages of documents using hand gestures. One can also combine several PaperTabs into one larger surface by placing them side by side, or share files by touching one tablet to another.

PaperTab is powered by an Intel i5 processor, which seems to be separate from the actual display and connected to the PaperTab with a thin data cable. We're unsure if this is the way the device is planned to work when finalized or it's just a prototype. We'll find out pretty soon, as Plastic Logic plans to reveal PaperTab to the press Tuesday at CES 2013.

"Plastic Logic's flexible plastic displays are completely transformational in terms of product interaction. They allow a natural human interaction with electronic paper, being lighter, thinner and more robust compared with today's standard glass-based displays," says Indro Mukerjee, CEO of Plastic Logic.

How do you like the idea of a flexible, paper-thin tablet? Share your thoughts in the comments.

'Table PC' That You Can Play Monopoly On

LAS VEGAS — Remember the old Microsoft Surface, the one that was basically a big "table" PC? Lenovo thinks that idea deserves a second try, unveiling the IdeaCentre Horizon, a Windows 8 touch-screen PC that users can lay flat for shared experiences such as games.

Claiming the Horizon to be the world's first "interpersonal PC," Lenovo has packed the machine with a suite of games and apps — including a Windows 8 version of Monopoly — from the likes of Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and Bluestacks. It even comes with special accessories, such as e-dice and four joysticks for multiplayer gameplay.

The screen measures 27 inches, and can be moved to a "normal" angle, transforming the Horizon into a regular all-in-one PC. Lenovo will also be showing off the IdeaCentre "Gamma" at CES — a 39-inch monster PC that's based on the same collective-experience concept.

The Horizon is powered, in part, by Lenovo Auro, a proprietary interface that supports multiple users. It automatically engages when the screen is laid flat, and also has a built-in link to Lenovo's App Shop, which will offer apps optimized for the Table PC experience.

Some of the apps that are either pre-loaded or are part of the "exclusive access package" for the Horizon are:
  •     Monopoly
  •     Draw Race 2 HD
  •     King of the Opera
  •     Stagelight, where players create music
  •     FilmOn TV, with access to 120 streaming channels
  •     Painting and coloring apps
The IdeaCentre Horizon is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor, packs Nvidia GeForce graphics and includes Dolby Home Theatre v4 audio. It's planned for a summer launch, and will cost $1,699.

Windows 8 Tablet Without the Guts

Lenovo-mobile-monitor

LAS VEGAS — When is a tablet not a tablet? When it's a mobile monitor. Lenovo unveiled at CES Sunday a portable monitor with 10-finger touch ability, optimized for Windows 8.

The ThinkVision LT1423p Mobile Touch Monitor is meant to be a companion to Windows 8 users on the go, giving them extra screen space — with touch — for a remote setup. Keep in mind, however, that Windows 8's new home-screen UI (formerly called "Metro") doesn't support multiple screens, so the monitor might be best used as a companion for non-touch notebooks.

Lenovo offers both wired ($349) and wireless ($449) versions of the ThinkVision, which measures 13.3 inches diagonal, and has a resolution of 1,600 x 900. It's an IPS (in-plane switching) LCD panel that's protected by Gorilla Glass, and is said to have a viewing angle that's "incredibly wide." Yes, it includes a stand.

The monitor also comes with a stylus — a wise choice for a monitor that may often be used to display the "classic" Windows desktop, which tends to need more precision than a finger is capable of. Lenovo plans to launch it in the spring.

The 100 Best iPad Apps

Trivia time: How many native iPad apps are there in the iTunes App Store? 1,000? 5,000? 10,000? Not even close. Apple revealed in October, 2012 that there are more than 275,000 dedicated iPad apps. That's more than a quarter million apps that run the gamut from the social to the business-centric. That's a lot of software battling for a home on your iPad, or iPad mini. As such, you need to be discerning in your app selection—your iPad may quickly fill up, depending on its storage capacity, multimedia content, and lure of free and dirt-cheap apps.

The App Store contains some truly magnificent apps and some... that are not. So the vital question is this: How do you find the gems? The most obvious answer is to read the App Store user ratings and reviews, but that's a potential time-suck of massive proportions. Plus, user reviews can be highly biased, and a little-known app may have only a handful of reviews. The better answer would be to check out PCMag.com's picks as the staff has tested hundreds of iPad apps and weeded out the stinkers.

Apple iPad Coverage What You'll Find in This List
PCMag.com's 100 best iPad apps list focuses on native iPad apps that deliver unique and compelling tablet-based experiences all their own, not iPhone apps running in 2X mode. We've broken our selections into seven categories to make finding the best iPad apps even easier: Social Networking, Business, Communication, Entertainment, Creativity, News/Reference/ Information, and Reading. Unless stated, all of the apps presented here are compatible with all existing iPad models.
