How to Install Multi-View on Your Samsung Galaxy S3 to Run Multiple Apps at the Same Time

While many of the U.S. carriers have updated their Samsung Galaxy S3 devices to Android 4.1.2 already, one major absence from the upgrade is Samsung's Premium Suite. One of the coolest features from the Premium Suite is Multi-View, a function that lets you truly multitask by running two apps at the very same time—right next to each other.

As you can see above in the left image, I have both Pandora and Spotify running. Why? Because why not?!? On the right, I have YouTube on top and Maps on the bottom.
Pretty cool, right?
The international versions of the Galaxy S3 have this feature already, so it's just us stateside folks who've been left out in the cold by our carriers—like always.
Well, if you're a rooted Sprint user, you can take the do-it-yourself approach and get this awesome Multi-View feature now! Developer gruesomewolf has created a flashable file for us all that will add the Multi-View feature to your GS3. As long as you meet the basic requirements, installing this mod is very easy.
Note: Versions for other carriers should be available soon. Check back for updated links and instructions for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

What You'll Need for This Mod

  • The Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy S3 (again, check back soon for updates on other carriers)
  • Root
  • A deodexed ROM running Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2
  • The mod file
  • A current backup, just in case.

How to Install Multi-View on Your GS3

  1. Place the mod file in the root of your internal SD card.
  2. Reboot to recovery.
  3. Clear cache and dalvik cache.
  4. Install the mod file.
  5. Reboot.
If you have any questions on this process, ask away in the comments below, or over in our forum.

How to Use Your New Multi-View Feature!

So, now that you've installed it, let's get in to how to use Multi-View.
Once you are booted back up, press and hold the Back button. You should notice a small tab on the left side of your screen. Press that tab, and you will see a scrollable list of your apps.

To use Multi-View, simply drag an app to the home screen (this works in portrait or landscape orientation).

Keep in mind, if you are in an app already, you drag another app to either the top or bottom half (left or right if in landscape mode). If you are on your homescreen and drag an app, it will be full screen, as only one app is open.
This mod takes Samsung's original design and actually improves it; the original feature is limited in the apps you can use with Multi-View, but with gruesomewolf's mod, there is no limitation to the apps you can use.

Just press the "Edit" button to change the apps that appear in the Multi-View window. Additionally, you can change the size of the two windows by adjusting the slider, swap windows using the "Swap" button or go full screen with the "Full Screen" button.
It's awesome devs like gruesomewolf who not only provide us with mods that take our devices to next level, but do so in an open way. Because he open-sourced his mod, it won't be long before it's baked into your favorite ROM. Not only that, but it is only a matter of time until this mod is ported over to the other U.S. carriers. Again, check back to get the files when they become available.

Samsung Galaxy S4 to come with pre-loaded SwiftKey keyboard,

Samsung knows how to make its devices better from the rest of the pack. Rather than touting the best hardware out there, their efforts are more focused on software — though making their own chips can also help in the long-run — to make for a better user experience. The introduction of Smart Stay and gesture-based controls in the Galaxy S III scored big in my book, as things like those make one a more productive individual.

The new Galaxy S4 will build on top of that and include eye scrolling to the mix, once again helping the Korean giant sell a ton of smartphones. But that’s not all – according to The Wall Street Journal article, Samsung will also preload SwiftKey with the new Galaxy smartphone, something it already did with the Galaxy Note II.

As you may already know from my previous posts, SwiftKey is by far the best virtual keyboard software I used. Simply put – it’s super smart, making typing on an on-screen keyboard as fast (or even faster) as on the physical one. Yeah I love it, and I love Samsung for including it in its flagship device. Rather than building one from the scratch, they decided to license the best virtual keyboard out there. Something other OEMs could do as well… if they want to compete with the market leader

Leaked videos showcase SmartPause and Floating Touch features of the Galaxy S IV
Samsung is ready to announce its Galaxy S IV handset tonight in New York City. In the days following up to the launch, a series of images allegedly of the device have given us a sneak peek into its form factor. Now, two leaked videos showcase some of the software features of the upcoming flagship Adroid phone.
One video, embedded below, demos SmartPause, an eye-tracking feature that’ll pause a video when you turn your eyes away from the screen. The other video shows off Floating Touch, a feature that lets you hover your finger above the screen like the S-Pen.

Optimus G Pro's Special; Eye Recognition, Dual Camera

LG is beating Samsung to the punch with eye recognition technology by announcing today that its new technology will be appearing soon on the Optimus G Pro. The new feature, called Smart Video, automatically plays and stops video without any manual input from the user, by tracking the user’s eye movements. The front camera can detect a user’s gaze, and stop video playback when a user looks away, and start it again when they look back.

The unit will also be decked out with a function called Dual Camera, which captures photos simultaneously on the front and back cameras, and provides users with a picture in picture comparison.

These features will be a part of the Value Pack upgrade which will hit the Korean market next month, and they will surely be used on upcoming LG devices. Other features of the Value Pack include QRemote function, which will function with LG Smart TV’s, and an option to change LED flashing colors.

For more details, check out the press release below.

EYE RECOGNITION TO BRING NEW LEVEL OF ENTERTAINMENT CONVENIENCE TO LG SMARTPHONE
Technology to Debut in Smart Video Feature in Optimus G Pro
SEOUL, Mar. 14, 2013 — Smart Video, a new multimedia UX feature from LG Electronics (LG), will be unveiled for the first time in the Optimus G Pro. Smart Video takes viewing videos on mobile devices to a whole new level of convenience with eye recognition that eliminates the need to manually control playback during the viewing experience.
Through the implementation of advanced eye recognition technology, Smart Video recognizes the position of the viewer’s eyes and automatically plays or stops the video without any manual input from the user. When the viewer’s eyes are no longer focused on the smartphone display, the front camera recognizes this and immediately pauses the video automatically. Once the user’s gaze returns to the smartphone, the video resumes playback from the point last viewed.
In addition to the Smart Video feature, Optimus G Pro will also be equipped with the world’s first Dual Camera function. The Dual Camera feature is an extension of the Dual Recording feature which debuted on the Optimus G Pro introduced in the Korean market last month. Dual Camera simultaneously captures photographs using both the front and back cameras for a picture-in-picture composition. Users can now be a part of the story, not just observers.
“LG is continuously innovating to offer creative ways to offer a user experience that adds value to our customers,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Elec-tronics Mobile Communications Company. “It’s the positive UX that will differentiate smartphones in 2013 and beyond, not only cutting-edge hardware specs.”
The Smart Video and Dual Camera features will be introduced as a part of the Value Pack upgrade which will be offered for the Optimus G Pro in the Korean market next month. These features will also be made available for some LG premium smartphones in the future.
Other features in the Value Pack upgrade include:
  • Magic Remote Pad and Text Keypad via the QRemote function. These new options for QRemote work specifically with LG
  • Smart TVs to enhance convenience when using Optimus G Pro as a remote control for LG Smart TVs.
  • The Smart LED Lighting outlining the home button of the Optimus G Pro will be upgraded so users can customize the colors
  • to correspond to their favorite contacts. The flashing of the LED in different colors will allow users to identify the source of
  • incoming calls, missed calls, unread messages and emails.
  • Video Pause/Resume allows the user to stop and start in record mode for one continuous video file.
  • The first Color Emoticons in an Android smartphone for more personalized text messages.

The 'First Tablet for Women'

Finding difficulty using that iPad or Kindle? Don't worry, ladies. There's finally an easy-to-use tablet just for us.

It's called the ePad Femme, and the Middle East–based Eurostar Group, who developed the product, are describing it as the "world's first tablet made exclusively for women." It's already going over about as well as the Bic "Cristal for Her" Ball Pen on Amazon.

The eight-inch tablet comes preloaded with a pink background and a number of apps (so we don't have to stress over the difficulty of doing it ourselves) that revolve around yoga, grocery shopping, weight loss, and cooking. If a 5-year-old can figure it out, we probably can too, right?

It's also Wi-Fi-accessible, runs on Android 4.0, and has 16GB of internal storage. But if we can't download our own apps, we certainly don't need to know what those numbers mean for the tablet or what we're able to do with an SD card slot.

The ePad Femme was first announced in October, but it was touted as a Valentine's Day gift idea.
"The Tablet comes preloaded with applications so you can just turn it on and log in to cooking recipes or yoga," Mani Nair, Associate Vice President for Marketing at Eurostar Group, told the Jerusalem Post. "It makes a perfect gadget for a woman who might find difficulties in terms of downloading these applications and it is a quick reference."

Nair insists that the ePad Femme isn't sexist and explained that Eurostar Group is focusing on pre-loaded applications for many of their products.

However, Eman Al Nafjan, a Saudi feminist blogger, feels that this is just another way to give women information targeted at pleasing their husbands. She explained that many women are tech-savvy, and in countries like Saudi Arabia, women spend a lot of time online since they are not allowed to drive or travel without a male relative.

"Whoever made this tablet doesn't understand us very well," Al Nafjan said. "We are home all the time and we are extremely tech-savvy."

The ePad Femme is going for about $190, and EUROSTAR had only sold about 7,000 units as of mid-February.

Whether people want to go with an ePad or another tablet, there are plenty of other non-gender-specific options available that are a lot less polarizing.
I'm sure we can figure it out on our own.

20 Advertising Networks to Monetize Your Mobile App

Mobile advertising is such a nightmare these years, with terribly low revenue and click-through rates crippling both commercial companies and indie developers.
However, more and more remarkable advertising networks are rising, offering a great variety of monetization models to help developers maximize the revenue of their mobile apps, and yet most of us only know about AdMob.

mobile app monetizing platform
But you deserve a better advertising network, and that is the purpose we have here: to feature 20 advertising networks with standard and creative app-vertising models, flexible monetization features and detailed analytics to pump up your revenue strategically.
To make it easier, we provided a comparison list for you to check out the features of each network in a glance. But first, let’s take a look at what each network has in store for you.

Our Favorite Picks

AdMob

Being the child of the behemoth Google, AdMob should be the first advertising network for app developers to consider for monetization. What makes it a worthy platform here is probably not its brand, but its integration system a.k.a SDK (Software Development Kit) that helps you connect across famous platforms such as iOS, Android and the rising Windows Phone.
admob
Given the strong coding nature of Google, the SDK allows you to choose from a wide range of ad formats for both mobile devices and tablets, including standard banner ads, interstitial (full screen) ads, interactive ads and exclusive custom search ads. Integration is far less painful with AdMob, as the documentation is clean and complete with recommendations for best practices.
However, tons of personal reports indicate that the eCPM or revenue on the AdMob is very low, and as usual, support is hard to reach. Apparently best integration does not mean maximum revenue, so you might want to try your luck with other reliable networks with dynamic monetization models such as CPI (Click Per Install).

Millennial Media

As the first mobile advertising network that furthered itself to an Initial Public Offering (IPO), Millennial Media clearly knows how to do business, and offers lots of grand deals for developers ranging from top mobile gaming companies to indie teams.
The intelligence gathered from its many research probably makes Millennial Media a full-fledged self-service platform which not only offers publishing features, but advertising features that you could utilize to promote your apps.
millennial media
You can create a client campaign that lets advertisers compete for your inventory within the respective categories – date range, targeting, pacing and pricing – and all transactions are reported inside its systematic dashboard. Millennial Media is also the loyal supporter of Ad Network Mediation that grants you the ability to display advertisement from other advertising networks, such as AdMob.
You can even allocate traffic across the networks by percentage, location, and ad revenue based on eCPM. The House Ads also helps you to cross-promote your lines of apps inside your own application. That said, it’s clear enough that Millennial Media is simply the best combination of advertisement and monetization for your app.

Adfonic

Adfonic cares not only about integration, it cares for the performance of your advertisement, with the promise of 95% average fill rates on both iOS and Android, and even up to 10x higher eCPMs with rich media advertisement. To achieve this, they are working directly with international agencies and brands such as Samsung, ESPN, BBS and Amazon Kindle to display their giant campaigns in your mobile app.
adfonic
Adfonic also supports AdMob mediation to ensure your fill rate is exploding, and your maximum revenue is guaranteed. Built with the mind of supporting giant advertisers and publishers, Adfonic offers Ad Serving API that lets you customize the type of ads you request and specific ways they will be returned, for example XML, JSON, URL encoded or raw HTML.
You can even manage multiple accounts through a single platform, and access all publishers’ data through real-time reporting API and analytics dashboard. Though the flexibility is great, it could translate into lots of technical difficulties and confusion that may lead to possible revenue loss. Sometimes, less is more. Implement only what is necessary.

Chartboost

Standard mobile advertising networks are good, but when it comes to displaying ads on your game titles, they become hugely irrelevant due to the fact that the standard networks are targeting mass audiences with great variety of interests.
Chartboost is the solution for game developers, as it’s a platform that’s dedicated to advertise gaming ads, with up-to-par integration and analytics technology.
chartboost
Chartboost offers lots of creative solutions that are bent on heavy promotion and they are all done in a professional sense. They also optimize your eCPM while advertisers increase their bids to pump out the revenue number you will really like to see. You only need 5 lines of codes to make Chartboost start working for you.
The ads are mostly about downloading another new game, so it meets the interest of the audiences who are already playing games, and always seeking for the next fun factor.

Tapjoy

In-App Purchasing has been a hot debate topic lately, with most mobile gamers arguing that they don’t want to pay repeatedly just to complete a game. But how about doing something to earn the in-game coins, such as downloading another free game?
That’s what Tapjoy is doing: offering the gamers the chance to earn virtual currency by performing real-world action. The model is called incentivized download.
tapjoy
You give gamers the incentive (usually in virtual currency) to choose or download apps. In place, they can reap virtual rewards and premium content on 20,000+ games supported by Tapjoy in 1 billion network devices. Over 77 million monthly active users are on Tapjoy, so common issues like fill rate does not exist here.
What is an issue is that Apple is certainly not happy with the model, since the network has raised massive concerns about the gaming of the App store’s download chart. Apple has been banning this practice for all iOS apps, but Tapjoy gets around the rules by re-launching the system as a web application, which Apple cannot rule over.
If Apple hates it, you know that this is really an effective, even a bit dirty way to monetize and promote your game.
